BALLYKELLY AND NAVACONCEJO: TWO VERY SPECIAL PLACES

Have you got a special placer where you keep going? Read about Naomi (last year assitant teacher) and Irene's special places and share yours with us. Add your comment!

Naomi's special place

Ballykelly is a small village less than 30 minutes away from the closest city which is called Londonderry. I have lived here since I was born until I moved to Belfast for university and the majority of my extended family still lives there today.  I would describe it as a very close knit community; it’s the type of place where everyone knows each other.
My favourite thing about this place is its natural beauty especially the Sperrin mountains which surround the area. These green hills make up the largest mountain range in Northern Ireland but are the least explored, which makes them even more special in my opinion. There are also impressive forests, rivers and parks that you won’t find anywhere else.
As well as this, it’s near my grandparents’ house which holds lots of memorable moments for me such as learning how to cook for the first time from my granny.
It must be said, it’s probably not the most exciting place in the world but it’ll always be my favourite one!
A view from the Sperrin mountains.
Irene's special place

Navaconcejo is a small village just over an hour's drive from Cáceres. The village is surrounded by mountains, as it is at the bottom of a valley. The whole county, called Jerte Valley, is popular with tourists, who like trekking and nature, as well as for the cherry blossom which many people come to watch at the beginning of each spring.

One of the most important elements in this valley landscape is the river Jerte, whose name has an Arab origin and means "pleasure". An it is really a pleasurable area, full of different species of trees and with many springs of water that come from the top of the mountains to the river.

My favourite place is a two kilometres walk from Navaconcejo to Cabezuela, the nearest village. It is a narrow path following the river bank, very close to the water. During periods when the weather is wet, the path can be really muddy an it may be difficult to follow in some parts. But at the same time, the walk is more beautiful because the river usually flows with more water.

Whenever I go to my village, I always try to do this walk. If the day is sunny you always meet people, especially after luch, so it is a good opportunity to have a chat and enjoy nature.

My special place is Barcelona. Barcelona is a city located in the northeast of Spain. It is the second largest city in Spain and has about five million people. Barcelona is the place where I always go with my family on summer holidays because it’s a beautiful and lively city and there we have an apartment.

The most important elements of this city are “the Sagrada Familia”, the park “Güel”, the “Rambla”, “Cataluña square”, “the light fountain”, “the Arch Triumph”, the “Camp Nou”… You can always find a lot of tourists visiting this monuments.

One of my favourite places is Castelldefels, a village in Barcelona. I like this place because it has a beach where I go with my family for relaxed and it has less crowded than the beach “Barceloneta”, for example. Other of my favourite places is the “Maquinista” which is a very big mall.

I like very much this interesting city. If you like the tourism you should visit this wonderful town.

  5. One of my favourite places is Paris.Paris is a ciyt located off the norteast of France. It is one of the most popular holiday destinations , but what makes it special for me is the feeling that I had the first time I saw the Eiffel Tower.

The Eiffel Tower is an amazing and impressive monument, one of the tallest towers in the world. When you reach the top, the views that you can gaze are really breathtaking.

The river Seine also impresses you because it goes through the whole city and it is a kind of magic when you can see all the monuments while you are sitting comfortably on a boat.

If you climb all the steps that take you to the top of the Arc de Triomphe, you will have again a delightful view of the city. It would be better to do it at night because all the monuments are full of lights of different colours and it is somenting that it's impossible to forget.

Everybody should visit this fantastic city at least once in life.

  6. My chosen place is "the mountain". This place is the highest of Cáceres where people can go there walking or by car. Walking, you can take about thirty minutes. The way may be tiring because its ascent.

When you arrive to the mountain, you can find a big restaurants and a nice guest house where live nuns. Moreover, there is a church which has the Patron Saint of Cáceres: "Virgen de la Montaña".
Since there, we can see the city. The view from there is spectacular.

Finally, the mountain is usually visited by a lot of tourists.

  7. My special place is Madrid. Madrid is the capital and the biggest city in Spain. It’s located in the centre of the country and it’s visited by millions of tourists every year. Moreover, it has many beautiful landmarks to visit.

I have a very long story with this city because I have been going there every year since I was three or four years old. One part of my mother’s family lives there, so we go to Madrid every year in Christmas to celebrate my cousin’s birthday.

When we go to Madrid, we always go for a walk along Castilian’s Avenue and we see the Prado Museum. When I was a child, all my mother's family went together to the Retiro Park and we played hide and seek. Then, we always go to see the Christmas lights and decoration. We also eat a squid sandwich in the Plaza Mayor while we see the Christmas market, which is a very popular tradition.

In short, I really love this city because I love big cities. I always like to go for a walk and see skyscrapers and people everywhere. I even like to go by underground… I enjoy a lot when I go there every year, so I hope to keep going there for many years.

  8. Hi Irene!
In the first place I would like to tell you that I have a lot of favourite places, but if I had to choose, I think it would be my country, which is located in Valencia de Álcantara, about one hour's drive from Cáceres.

I really like going there because...it has got amazing views of the scenary and, it is a very peaceful and isolated place where I can be relaxed, taking photos, playing with the animals, having a good time with my family, doing the garden or going for a walk among the big rocks...

Moreover I have gone there since I was 3 or 4 years old,so it is like my second home...I wouldn't change it because it's unique for me!

In conclusion, I'm sure that if you come to my country, you will want to go again!
It's worth getting up early to go there! JaJaJa

  10. Hi Irene!

I was thinking in my favourite place for a long time, and I have to say that I don´t really have one, because I have a lot, and it's really hard to choose only one of them. But I have to, so, here you are!

My chosen place is the swimming pool of my village. Yes, maybe I could have chosen another one, but, trust me, that place, in summer, when you can`t even breathe due to heat, it can be the best place in the world. But it's not just for necessity. It has beautiful views, it's not just a simple place where you can go to have a swim. I love it because I can be there in the company of my friends, playing cards under the shade of our favourite tree, which is in an isolated place, nearby the showers. I love scaping from the shadow to sunbathe. I have to deal with my light skin!

It's worth spending a day there. If you have a free day in summer, you shouldn`t miss a visit! Take the towel and your swimsuit because my village is pretty small, but it has a lot of amazing and wonderful places that you could know!

  11. Hi! I´m María Domínguez Parra, 1ºE.
My special place is Madrid. Madrid is the capital of Spain and it is largest city. Madrid is located in the centre of Spain and is one of the most popular tourist destinations.
The most important element of Madrid is “Puerta del Sol” because there is the kilometre 0. Other important places in Madrid are: the Prado Museum, “Gran vía”, “La Castellana”, “Plaza Mayor” “Callao” or "Bernabéu".
My favourite place in Madrid is the “Gran vía”. The” Gran Vía” is the most famous street in Madrid. “Gran Vía” is unique, unmistakable and extraordinary, and his history narrates the meeting of the Spanish society with modern life. Gran Vía is from the Square Spain to Alcala Street. In 2010, the “Gran Vía” made it is first century of existence.
For me Madrid is the best city of Sapin. I recommend to visit Madrid.
