PAU TIPS

1.-TRUE OR FALSE

·        Don’t forget to write True/False!

·        Use not only correct language but also a variety of expressions.

·        You must include at least one direct quote from the text in your answer.

·        A quote means you copy the exact words from the text.

·        Always say where the quote comes from (for example: paragraph number, line number).

·        Put the copied words inside inverted commas (“ ”). The full stop goes after the inverted commas in British style.

Examples:

A. FALSE. In the last paragraph, lines 3-4, it is said that “unemployment is a difficult issue to handle by most governments in Europe”.

B. TRUE. According to the text (paragraph 2, lines 4-5), many people prefer spending “their holidays relaxing on the beach than visiting isolated village from rural áreas”.

C. TRUE.  The writer emphasizes the importance of practising sport “in order to be in good shape” (paragraph 2, line 4).

D. FALSE. No, the writer never says that learning a language is an easy task. In fact, in paragraph 3, line 2, it is claimed that “learning a language is very demanding and a lifelong activity”.

E. TRUE. The writer states that the European Union “is facing social problems that have to do with race and religión”, as it can be read in paragraph 2, lines 2-3.

F. TRUE. In the third paragraph, line 1, the text describes the situation of inmigrants in Spain as “being difficult”. “Financial problems” and “low level of the language” are mentioned as some of these difficulties.

G-TRUE. The author believes that “material failures and design flaws contributed to the sinking of the Titanic”. This information can be found in paragraph 4.

2.-Answer 2 of the following 3 questions.

·        Use your own words as far as possible.

·        Don’t quote or copy sentences from the text.

Example

The play, set during the Serbo-Bulgarian war of 1885 and being staged in the Ivan Vazov National Theatre in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, has so enraged nationalists in the country that they have called on the production to be shut down and for Malkovich, 70, its director, to be kicked out of the country.

Question A: What do protesters want?
Option 1. They want the play to be cancelled and John Malkovich expelled from Bulgaria.

Option 2. They want the play to be banned and John Malkovich removed from Bulgaria.

How to answer in your own words

  1. Read the question carefully.
→ What exactly is it asking? (e.g. What do protesters want?)
  2. Find the part of the text that has the answer.
→ Highlight or underline the key information.

they have called on the production to be shut down and for Malkovich, 70, its director, to be kicked out of the country.

  1. Pick out only the important ideas.
→ Ignore extra details (names, ages, where the play is set, etc., unless the question asks for them).

The production to be shut down. Malkovich to be kicked out of the country.

  1. Change the wording.
    • Swap phrases: production to be shut downplay to be stopped/ banned/ cancelled
    • Swap verbs: kicked outexpelled / removed / sent away
    • Shorten long parts into simple words.

3.-Find words in the text.

Read the instructions carefully to know what you must do:

  • Find a synonym (a word with a similar meaning) or an antonym (a word with the opposite meaning)
  • Find a word that matches a given definition
  • Use a word from the text correctly in a sentence

 Example
